About Dr. Casano

Peter Casano, MD

Peter Casano, MD

Otolaryngologist · Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeon

Dr. Casano is a practicing ear, nose, and throat surgeon with more than thirty years of clinical experience. He cares for patients on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the North Shore of Louisiana, with a particular interest in complex sinus and nasal disorders. He is the creator of the ENT 3D educational project — a long-running effort to build clear, accurate, three-dimensional patient and physician education using the same software pipelines used in feature animation.

Dr. Casano completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Tulane University in New Orleans, then earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his residency in Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery at the same institution. He is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society.

Training and credentials

Practice and clinical interests

Dr. Casano practices general otolaryngology with subspecialty depth in complex and revision sinus surgery. His clinical interests include endoscopic sinus surgery, frontal sinus procedures (including the modified Lothrop and its variations), revision surgery for patients with a history of multiple unsuccessful sinus operations, surgical approaches that support neurosurgical work, repair of cerebrospinal fluid leaks, sinus and nasal tumors, and pediatric sinus surgery.

His general practice covers the typical scope of an ear, nose, and throat physician, including ear surgery, laryngology, endoscopic examinations, head and neck workups, skin cancers and reconstruction with local flaps and grafts, and snoring and sleep apnea procedures.

In his approach to patient care, Dr. Casano emphasizes thorough medical management before surgery, careful selection of antibiotics guided by bacterial cultures when appropriate, and attention to the patient's time and financial resources. For patients whose presumed sinus problems are actually driven by headache disorders or reflux, he is experienced in initiating the right treatment without unnecessary referrals.

Practice locations

Dr. Casano sees patients at Ochsner Medical Center — Hancock Campus on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and at the Slidell Memorial Hospital East campus on the North Shore of Louisiana.

The ENT 3D project

The ENT 3D project is Dr. Casano's long-running educational program. It uses high-end three-dimensional modeling and stereoscopic video — the same production tools used in feature animation and visual effects — to make the anatomy and pathology of the nose and sinuses understandable to patients, primary-care physicians, and surgical trainees. The project began in the 1990s with the original Nose Cards booklet (a 39-card stereoscopic anatomy reference, first published in 1998) and has since grown into a multi-chapter video curriculum, browseable web-based 3D anatomy library, and a continuing-medical-education course accredited through Ochsner Health.

The work draws on a custom production pipeline — Pixologic ZBrush, Autodesk 3ds Max, Chaos V-Ray, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and a dedicated render farm — assembled and operated personally by Dr. Casano. The stereoscopic computer-generated sinus anatomy work was presented as an instructional course at the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery annual meeting in San Francisco in 1997, and at the University of Mississippi Medical Center otolaryngology grand rounds.

The project will continue throughout Dr. Casano's professional lifetime. Future chapters will extend the catalog into additional head-and-neck topics.
